Quick answer
Can a foreigner rent a VPS in Japan without a Japanese phone number or ID?
Yes, though rarely from a Japanese host. Read on 2 November 2026, Sakura, ConoHa and KAGOYA verify a phone number at signup, XServer may, Sakura asks for a Japanese address and number, and none of the four lists crypto. 8 hosts taking crypto with no ID sold a comparable Tokyo VPS that day; Lacquerbay rents one too.
What do Japanese VPS hosts ask a foreigner for at signup?
At a Japanese host, the phone check does the job an ID check does elsewhere. The four hosts below are Japanese companies; their signup pages, help pages and terms were read on 2 November 2026. None of the pages read asks for a nationality. The obstacles are practical: a phone number that receives a code, a Japanese address at Sakura, and payment methods built for Japanese banks and cards.
Signup at four Japanese VPS hosts, read 2 November 2026
| Host | Phone check | Address or residency rule | Payment methods listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sakura (さくらのVPS) | Phone number verification in the order flow | The service assumes use in Japan; members register a Japanese address and phone number; a foreign number only on request by email | Credit card, bank transfer, posted invoice, bank debit |
| ConoHa VPS (GMO Internet) | A code by automated call or SMS | No residency clause in the member terms (in force since 4 July 2013) | Credit card, Amazon Pay, bank transfer, PayPal, convenience store, Pay-easy |
| XServer VPS | SMS or automated call in some cases; the number must start with 0 and have 10 or 11 digits | No residency clause in the terms read | Credit card, Paidy pay-later, prepaid credit |
| KAGOYA CLOUD VPS | A code by SMS or voice call on a first application | No residency clause in the terms read (last changed 21 November 2022) | Credit card (no debit cards), or bank debit by a stamped paper form |
No host above lists a cryptocurrency among its payment methods.
Can a foreign phone number pass the check?
Only Sakura answers in writing, and its answer is an email to support. Sakura's help page asks members for a Japanese address and phone number at which they can be reached, and tells anyone who wants to register a foreign number to write to its customer centre.
XServer's verification FAQ asks for a number that starts with 0 and has 10 or 11 digits, the way numbers are written inside Japan; when neither the SMS nor the automated call goes through, its support can arrange to skip the step. ConoHa asks for a number that can receive an SMS or a call, and KAGOYA sends its code the same two ways. Neither says whether a foreign number passes: that is unverified, not a yes.
Do Japanese VPS hosts ask foreigners for an ID document?
None of the four asks for an ID upload in the signup steps read on 2 November 2026; two keep the right to ask later. XServer's account terms (Article 4) let it request documents to confirm the identity behind an application. KAGOYA's terms let it ask for documents proving a change to the name, address or phone number on file. The Sakura and ConoHa pages read here mention no document.
Can you pay a Japanese VPS host with crypto?
No: none of the four lists a cryptocurrency. Cards are the common route, with limits. ConoHa takes American Express and Diners Club cards only from residents of Japan. KAGOYA refuses debit cards for online orders. XServer warns that some debit and prepaid cards may be declined by their issuer. KAGOYA's other route, bank debit, needs a paper form stamped with the seal registered at your bank and posted to its Kyoto office, and Sakura's invoice option arrives by post.

What does Lacquerbay ask a foreign buyer for?
No KYC: we ask for no identity document, no selfie, no card and no phone number. An account number is your whole login; an email address is optional. You top up a balance in crypto (BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC) from $25 and order the VPS from it. Residents and companies of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Russia, Belarus, mainland China, Yemen and Western Sahara, and of the occupied regions of Ukraine, cannot use the service.
Your VPS runs in a data centre inside the city you choose, on IP addresses registered to that territory (HK, SG or JP in the regional registry whois). A VPS has data-centre IP addresses: we make no promise about how IP location databases, streaming services or other websites classify them.
